There is this song on the radio right now called "
If I Die Young". It is beautifully sung, and I love it...but it makes me cry every time I hear it. When I first heard the song, it was about a month after our scare with Lincoln in the hospital, and I couldn't help but think of how devastated I would be if we were to lose him, or June for that matter.
Now the message behind the song takes on a new meaning as we cope with the loss of our best family friend here in Tucson. His name was Chris Rea. He died on 12/18/2010 at the age of 35 in a snowboarding accident. It was a tragic accident, and really should not have happened. If only circumstances were different. If we could go back and change the past...how different that day could have turned out.
Here are some pictures of the times we spent with Chris these past several years.

We mostly have pictures of going Jeeping with him, but really we did so much more than that. He was at our house probably every other weekend, and Andy sat a few seats away from him at work. They spoke all of the time, and Chris would come over to work on cars or other manly projects, and our bi-weekly BBQs. We would go to his house or Hooters to watch MMA fights together, and we would also do other fun things around Tucson like baseball games, hockey games, horse-racing, Rennaissance Faire, Oktoberfest, Beerfest, etc.
He was fun, funny, and so nice. I love that he never hesitated to pick up one of my kids and give them a hug and some kind words, or carrying them around and letting them sit on his lap when he was visiting. I am so sad that he is gone. Not just for the loss of such a great friend to me and to Andy, but also the loss to my kids, of never knowing or remembering someone who was so kind to them when they were young, and who had the potential to be a very good friend to them as they grew up. People as good as Chris are rare and very hard to find. He will be very very missed.
If you were curious, the lyrics to "If I Die Young". Many of the words don't really apply, and seem to be more for a young girl...but I thought that the imagery was very good.
If I die young, bury me in satin
Lay me down on a, bed of roses
Sink me in the river, at dawn
Send me away with the words of a love song
Uh oh, uh oh
Lord make me a rainbow, I’ll shine down on my mother
She'll know I’m safe with you when she stands under my colors, oh and
Life ain't always what you think it ought to be, no
Ain't even grey, but she buries her baby
The sharp knife of a short life, well
I’ve had, just enough time
If I die young, bury me in satin
Lay me down on a, bed of roses
Sink me in the river, at dawn
Send me away with the words of a love song
The sharp knife of a short life, well
I’ve had, just enough time
And I’ll be wearing white, when I come into your kingdom
I’m as green as the ring on my little, cold finger, I’ve
Never known the lovin' of a man
But it sure felt nice when he was holding my hand, there’s a
Boy here in town says he’ll, love my forever
Who would have thought forever could be severed by
The sharp knife of a short life, well
I’ve had, just enough time
So put on your best boys and I’ll wear my pearls
What I never did is done
A penny for my thoughts, oh no, I’ll sell them for a dollar
They're worth so much more after I’m a goner
And maybe then you’ll hear the words I been singin’
Funny when your dead how people start listenin’
If I die young, bury me in satin
Lay me down on a, bed of roses
Sink me in the river, at dawn
Send me away with the words of a love song
Uh oh (uh, oh)
The ballad of a dove (uh, oh)
Go with peace and love
Gather up your tears, keep ‘em in your pocket
Save them for a time when your really gonna need them, oh
The sharp knife of a short life, well
I’ve had, just enough time
So put on your best boys and I’ll wear my pearls
