Weekly Weigh-In

This week Lincoln did really really well. I think it was mostly due to the dedication of my mom in feeding him the right amounts of food while I was in the hospital.

June Elizabeth, Welcome to the World!

The birth story:

My OB appt was at 11:30am. I was sure that after the 5+ hours of contractions the previous night that I would have made some additional progress from the 3-4cm I was dilated the week before. Well, I was correct! I was 6cm dilated, my bag of water was bulging, so the OB decided that it was time to have a baby!

I went home, met Andy, said goodbye to Lincoln and my mom, and we were off! We arrived at the hospital around 1pm, and were in our labor & delivery room about 30min later. We got settled in, and they hooked me up to my IV at 2pm, and started my first round of antibiotics (for GBS+) at 2:20pm. About 3:30pm a doctor came by and broke my water, He said "Lots of clear fluid! Very nice." Around the same time the nurse started the pitocin to get my contractions really going. An hour later we started the second and final round of antibiotics.

Throughout this time they kept asking me if I wanted an epidural. I kept declining because the contractions weren't really hurting yet and I was curious to see how far I could go without pain meds. Well, that question was quickly answered, and I requested the epi around 4:45pm. I was checked at this time and was 7-8cm dilated. Due to shift changes and paperwork, it didn't arrive until 5:45! I thought I was going to die!! Luckily, it took very quickly and pretty evenly. I was comfortable enough to even rest a bit (not actually fall asleep, but close my eyes and relax).

Around 6:30 I started to feel a hot spot in my right butt cheek with each contraction. I had Andy give me a epi boost, but it didn't do anything. As the contractions kept coming, I started to feel some searing pain down low as well. I told the nurse, and I said that I thought this might be the "needing to push" feeling. I never got that feeling with Lincoln, until he was crowning because of the epidural, so I wasn't sure how it felt earlier on in the process. She checked me right as my doctor walked in. I was 10cm and ready to go!

Baby June's head was very very low already. I gave a practice push, and she said that they needed to set up for delivery. So I waited through a few more contractions as they broke the bed down and put out the sterile sheets. At around 6:50pm it was time to push for real! I pushed through one set of 3, and they decided that they needed to get the baby's nurses in and ready. I pushed through another set and she was just about crowning. I gave one more push and the doctor gave me a very small episiotomy to keep me from tearing in the northward direction (she said that those kinds of tears are very painful). Then I gave just a tiny push and out she came. After her arms were free the doctor had me reach down and pull her out the rest of the way. It was pretty cool!

She was born at 7:02pm on St. Patrick's Day, March 17, 2010. She is just a little thing, weighing in at 6lbs 8.5oz (exactly 1lb less than Lincoln's birth weight), and 18.5" long. Her APGARs were 8 and 9. Initially, there was quite a bit of concern that she had an imperfect bowel (where the anus is not attached to the large intestines), but after her poops started coming out on day 2, those fears were alieviated! Thank god!! She also initially failed the hearing test in one ear. But after re-testing the next day, she passed.

Now here we are starting on Day #3 of little June's life, all together at home. Things are just great right now! Lincoln has shown a lot more interest and curiosity about his baby sister than I expected. I am looking forward to see where this new adventure takes us! :)

Here she is, with her dark hair!

False Labor

Oh, the joys of the end of pregnancy! So I was up in the middle of the night for 3 hours with contractions anywhere from 2-6min apart. At 5:15am I had decided that I would wake Andy & my Mom and head to the hospital at 6am. Twenty minutes before 6, the contractions stopped dead. About 30min later they started again, but they were very infrequent (10-25min apart), and have since tapered down to nearly nothing...maybe 2 in an hour.

I am leaving for my 38 week OB appt in about half an hour, so we will see what she says about the "labor" last night and about my dilation. I will post an update when I get back.

Contractions

I have been having contractions since 1am. The contractions are between 2 min - 6 min apart, and about 1 - 2 mins long, since I started timing them 1.5 hrs ago. Not sure if we are headed to labor & delivery quite yet, but if they keep coming we will. Stay tuned for an update!

New pregnancy milestone

After 6:46pm today I officially became the most pregnant I have ever been. Lincoln was born at 37wks 5days gestation, and that is what June is today. So, we have a new record! ;)

Status update...
My mom arrived safely last Thursday and has been getting to know Lincoln's routine so that she can help out when June is born.

June is still head down and getting ready for the big day! She is probably between 7lbs and 7.5lbs.

We have been doing some mad cleaning around here, hoping to be on top of things before she is born.

Tomorrow the plan is to take Lincoln to the zoo!

Everything is well. We are just in a holding pattern waiting to see when June will make her big move!

The nice thing about breech babies...

is that they can still flip!

June suprised us all a bit by being head down today at our 37 week OB appt. I can't begin to tell you all how relieved I am that we no longer have to have a c-section, with a mandatory 4 day hospital stay, driving restrictions, lifting restrictions, and difficult recovery. Although a vaginal birth is no picnic, most women would agree that it is the easier route to go, all things considered.

Now, once my mom arrives tomorrow, we just have to wait for labor to begin! Other than now being 3-4cm dilated, I haven't noticed any timeable contractions like I experienced with Lincoln for the week prior to labor actually starting, so we could still be in for a bit of a wait. Who knows though, things can change very quickly when it comes to labor and delivery!

Lets all hope for an uncompilcated delivery and a healthy baby girl!

Here is my 37 week belly shot! Definitely getting big now!

Our new baby...

Haha, made you look! No June is still tucked away in my belly at least for a few more days, hopefully. However, we did just buy a new (to us) car!

It is a green & gray, 2004 Nissan Xterra. It has about 53K miles on it already, but seems to be in pretty good shape. We bought the Xterra at CarMax and sold our Subaru back to them. It seems like we got an okay deal on all of it. We are planning on keeping it for at least a couple of years, until baby #3 (if there is a baby #3) is almost here. We will miss our Subaru. It was a hot little sedan. But, the Xterra will be a lot more convenient with the kids and all of the stuff that comes with them, to say the least. So...yay for new cars!! :)

Weekly Weigh-In

Well I totally missed last week's weigh-in and didn't even realize it until Wednesday, when I finally got around to weighing him! So I figured that I would just roll the two weeks together instead.

The past two weeks have not been very good. Lincoln went through a period of time last week where it was uncommon for him to go more than 1 hour while awake without having at least one seizure. Because of that, it was very difficult to get meal times squeezed in between his frequent naps. So far the past two days have been a bit better, although the naps (and seizures) are still fairly frequent throughout the day.

Calorie Goal: 1340 cal/day

Feb 23: 1105 cal
Feb 24: 1017 cal
Feb 25: 1215 cal
Feb 26: 902 cal
Feb 27: 1528 cal
Feb 28: 900 cal
Mar 1: 1240 cal

Week average: 1130 cal/day

Mar 2: 1545 cal
Mar 3: 1112 cal
Mar 4: 937 cal
Mar 5: 955 cal
Mar 6: 1243 cal
Mar 7: 1487 cal
Mar 8: 1249 cal

Week total: 1218 cal/day

Lincoln's weight: On Wednesday of last week he was 29lbs even. Today he was 29lbs 5oz.

My weight: +44 lbs. Wahoo.

June's estimated weight: 6.5 lbs. What a big girl! We are so excited to meet her! :)

"Whatever you give a woman, she's going to multiply: If you give her sperm, she'll give you a baby. If you give her a house, she'll give you a home. If you give her groceries, she'll give you a meal. If you give her a smile, she'll give you her heart. She multiplies and enlarges what is given to her. So - if you give ......her any crap, you will receive a ton of shit". Stolen from MariFer.

It is a race against the clock.

Well. I am continuing to dilate. My OB said I was 2+cm today. She confirmed that June is still breech. She said that they give babies until the 37th week to flip on their own. Unfortunately, if I go into labor before she flips it is an immediate c-section. But if we make it to 37 weeks and she is still breech, then they will schedule an ECV. If it doesn't work they would like to deliver June. If it does work, she likes to induce labor if the conditions are favorable (which mine already are) so that the baby doesn't flip back over. However, she said that she doesn't feel comfortable forcing delivery during the 37th week (either via c-section or induction), so it is unlikely that they will schedule me for the ECV before the 17th. Which would be perfectly fine, except...I am continuing to dilate, and may possibly go into labor on my own before they can attempt a ECV...which means we have no option but have a c-section. Lincoln was born at 37wks 5days, so it isn't unlikely that I would deliver June that early as well. My doctor thinks that I may even go into labor before my mom arrives on March 11th. I guess we will just have to see who wins; my mom, me, June, or the doctors??

Will my mom get here in time?
Will June flip before the 10th?
Will they schedule the ECV before I go into labor?
Will the ECV work?
Will I end up with a c-section?

In the ideal situation, all of us will win... :)

June will flip sometime before March 10th and stay head down, my mom will arrive on March 11th, and I will continue to dilate, but not go into labor until at least the 15th of March. :)

March is Here. Wow.

Wow. What does that mean? Well, March is going to be a big month this year for us. We will be meeting our daughter, June, sometime this month. This month will change all of our lives forever. Wow.

At 36 weeks into my pregnancy with Lincoln I was a mass of emotions; anxiety, fear, and impatience were some of the big ones...but overwhelmingly I felt anticipation and excitement. I could not wait to meet the little boy that we had been dreaming of since we began trying to get pregnant almost 2 years prior. Life has a way of becoming more complicated than we anticipated. And now, about 20 months after Lincoln's birth, the final days of this pregnancy are rushing past. And again, I am a mass of emotions; anxiety, anticipation, excitement are some of them, sorrow and guilt are a few more...but overwhelmingly this time I feel fear.

Can I just say that I am terrified? I AM TERRIFIED! For so many reasons. People have said to me throughout this entire pregnancy...

"Wow, so soon?"

"It is gonna be so hard!"

"Life will never be the same."

"How are you gonna handle Lincoln and a new baby?"

And the one that bothers me the most..."Poor Lincoln, he doesn't know what is coming."

While all of these comments may be true. They do absolutely nothing to build my confidence as a mother, and the main caretaker of my children.

My answers to these questions have always been;

"Yes, so soon. We have always wanted our children close together, and despite Lincoln's condition, we didn't feel that we should let that drastically change our basic life plans."

"Yes, it is gonna be hard. It would be hard to add another child when Lincoln is older as well. Maybe he will be young enough at this point that it won't be too emotionally traumatic for him. I hope that we can manage."

"Yes, life will never be the same. When is it when you add a child...be it your first or 10th?"

"I don't know how I will handle Lincoln and the new baby. I guess we will just make do. I do know that I am not the only woman on earth to survive and do well at raising 2 young children, even if one of them has special needs and medical issues."

"Yes, I know that Lincoln has no idea what is going to happen to his life in a matter of weeks. I feel terrible guilt and sorrow that he will no longer be my one and only focus in life. But I hope with my whole being that eventually Lincoln and June will develop a special sibling relationship, that they are able to love each other, and learn from each other. That is why we are having another child so close together...not just for us, but for him as well."

I have been telling myself these things for 9 months now. Many times I had completely convinced myself of their truth. But now, as D-day approaches all of my (and other's) doubts have been growing stronger.

Honestly, I am so afriad that I can't do it!

I worry that I won't be able to get the support I need from others when I need it.

I also worry that everyone will say "I told you so" when we have hard days, undermining my confidence even further.

I am scared that by adding another child, instead of bringing our family closer together, and June being a great pal and companion for Lincoln as we hope, it will instead be the dumbest and worst decision we have ever made, for us, and for them.

I am absolutely terrified that life will throw us another curveball, and it will tear us all apart.

But mostly, I am terrified that both of them will suffer because I am not a good enough mother, a good enough organizer, a good enough teacher, a good enough homemaker, a good enough...whatever else is expected of me.
